It's a gimmick phonemakers throw out there for the sake of filling a specs sheet. I'm hardly one of those Apple fans who worship at the altar of Steve Jobs (I hate, hate that iOS doesn't let users freely place apps anywhere on the home screen) but I agree wholeheartedly with the late genius' "300 ppi" comment.

Quad HD looks really sexy on the spec sheet - it's also known as "2K resolution" - and I've fallen for the gaudy numbers too, but truth be told, I've never been able to tell the difference between Quad HD and "normal" HD (1080p resolution). Over the past two years, I've placed Quad HD phones (LG V20, G6, Samsung Galaxy S7, S8, etc) next to phones with "just" 1080p resolution (Huawei P9, OnePlus 3, OnePlus 5, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, etc) and ran the same apps and videos side by side and I'd be lying if I said I could see that Quad HD was "more clear." Depending on the device's screen size, Quad HD resolution offered anywhere from 400 to 500 ppi - well above the 300 "magic number" that Jobs gave. Of course, non-Apple phone companies have ignored that and, beginning with the LG G3 in 2014, most Android flagships shipped with what is called a "Quad HD" display, aka a 2,560 X 1,440 resolution screen. It turns out that there is a magic number right around 300 pixels per inch that, when you hold something around 10 or 12 inches away from your eyes, is the limit of the human retina to differentiate the pixels.

During his keynote, Jobs claimed that 300 ppi is essentially the most any of us will ever need for a mobile display.
